Belgian have to save for years to pay nursing home

The average Belgian  pension is not sufficient to pay the stay at a nursing home, Fleming need to save 100 EUR a month – twelve years long – before they can stay in a nursing home for three years.

The average cost of a nursing home residency amounts to 1.326,90 EUR a month in Flanders, while the average pension is about 900 EUR. The Research and Information Centre for Consumer Organizations laments the lack of transparency of the prices, especially the supplements that are charged. This may be one of the reasons why people prefer to stay at home as long as possible.
